Best Pop-Culture Costumes for Halloween

Halloween is just 4 days away! And if you love the holiday, but are too busy to go all out with your costumes, we have some easy pop-culture ideas for you. They’re affordable and you can probably find most of the pieces in your wardrobe – talk about being instantly recognizable. Some characters are from your favorite Netflix or TV series, while others are some of the hottest pop stars out there.

Daenerys Targaryen

You love Game of Thrones, both the books and the HBO television series. Well, maybe not the last few seasons, but over all, you’re a GoT super fan. Can you think of an iconic character that even non-GoT fans (yes, they exist) will know? I can think of one, the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen. Any outfit you’ve got lying around that even slightly hints at “Renaissance Fair” will probably do. The most important piece is to make sure you have her iconic hairdo. The long white hair with curls. If you don’t already sport this hair naturally, you can get a wig for $20 at Amazon.

The Clown from It

Go full-creepy by dressing up as Pennywise the Clown from It. If you don’t want to splurge on a once-a-year clown costume, any white ensemble will work. Bunched up construction paper will work for the ruffles on the arms and neck. There are only three key parts to this costume: the white clown face, orange hair, and the red balloon. The makeup and wig can be found on Amazon for under $30 and if your local party store is all out of red balloons, make a fake one with some red paper and a stick

Janet from The Good Place

If you love The Good Place, Janet is an easy character to dress up as, especially if you have lots of purple outfits in your closet. Or borrow the purple vest and skirt from a friend. Perhaps the priciest and weirdest part of this outfit is the succulent plant. Purchase one locally at your florist for $4 or $5 if you want or simply print one out! Unless you plan on taking care of the plant after Halloween, no need to kill a cactus in the long run just for one day of trick or treating.

Taylor Swift

Glitter lover? Great! You can be Taylor Swift from her new album Lover. Any sequin outfit will do, but short shorts and short bodysuits are preferable. Then there’s glitter hair spray, glitter make-up, glitter nails, glittery butterfly or heart-shaped hair accessories, and any other sparkly piece you can think of. For the full effect, add a glitter guitar to your costume.

Stranger Things – Anyone

Netflix’s hottest and most viewed show is Stranger Things. Pick any character – you might even be able to create the entire cast just by walking down the street and meeting strangers. You could go as Eleven, just make sure you have some fake blood running out of your nose and an intense stare. Or dress up as the Scoops Ahoy employees with that old yacht outfit you bought years ago and never had the chance to wear. Striped shirt, red tie, and the white navy cap can be found on Amazon for less than $10 each.

Social Media Filter Costume

If dressing up isn’t your thing, you can still partake in Halloween! How about becoming an Instagram or Snapchat filter. All you’ll need a large poster board, cut a hole in the middle for your face, and paint the poster with your favorite filter design. You can satisfy your hidden arts and crafts and costume-y desire without actually having to put any makeup on yourself. Weird. That’s sort of how social media filters work too, right? Head over to your local stationary store and find everything you’ll need for under $10. Low maintenance and a strong statement, you can’t go wrong with this costume.
