Last Friday over a million Chileans participated in mostly peaceful protests about economic inequality. A 4% increase in subway fares triggered some rioting that has led to at least 20 deaths. Overall protest goals include better pay, better schools, medical care, improved pensions and housing.

In response, Chile’s President Pinera has removed his cabinet to recruit a new one. He also raised the minimum wage, increased pensions and removed the subway fare hike. Alfonso Swett, president of the Production and Commerce Confederation, joined a government meeting to address the crisis.
