Italy has been hit hard by the Covid-19 virus with approximately 3,000 infected and 100 deaths so far. The country has had the most deaths of any country outside China. The spreading disease is forcing authorities to take drastic action in an effort to slow the growth of cases. To that end, grade schools, day care centers and universities across the country have been shut down for two weeks until March 15th. Northern Italy, the epicenter of the Italian outbreak, has had school closings back to February.

Other nations such as China, Japan and Hong Kong have already closed their schools. In China, students are doing their work through an online learning curriculum.

Worldwide, the coronavirus outbreak has infected nearly 100,000 people and killed at least 3,281, a 3.3% death rate. The vast majority of these cases have occurred in China, the source of the outbreak. The top 5 countries are China (80,400+), South Korea (6,000+), Italy (3,000+), Iran (2,900+) and Japan (1,000+). According to the World Health Organization, covid-19 is much more likely to cause death older people and those who have compromised immune systems.
