It has been reported that Netflix and Nickelodeon have inked a massive $200 million dollar deal, which will bring original and new Nickelodeon content to the streaming giant. The Spongebob Squarepants franchise is the headliner. Rumors are swirling around that a Squidward musical series is one of the main productions expected to hit Netflix as well.
For Netflix, this deal is about maintaining existing subscribers in a steaming world that now includes Disney+. For Netflix to continue to compete in the children’s sector they needed the major boost they get by bringing in Nickelodeon. It ain’t Disney, but is pretty good. The only other big kiddy kahuna out there is Sesame Street.
Details of how much Nickelodeon content that will be arriving on Netflix have yet to be released. Note: Some Nick shows such as Drake and Josh or Dora the Explorer are already on other streaming services such as Hulu and Amazon Prime, which begs the question…is this an exclusive deal?
