Venezuela Arrests US Oil Executives

During Tuesday’s State of the Union address, President Trump denounced Venezuela’s President Nicholas Maduro as a tyrant and embraced opposition leader Juan Guaidó as Venezuela’s rightful president. On Wednesday night Venezuela arrested six US oil executives, five of whom are Venezuelan citizens and the other a legal resident. The executives are from Houston based oil company Citgo. Families of the executives have gone to social media to demand their safety.

The arrests escalate tensions between the US and Venezuelan government. In January 2019, Nicholas Maduro announced that Venezuela was cutting off diplomatic relations with the US due to the country’s support for Guaidó.
